Gynecomastia Affects about l/4 of Male Population. Gynecomastia is excessive breast tissue or overdeveloped and enlarged breasts, and is quite common in older men. The condition is often the result of hormonal changes, heredity and the use of steroids and certain drugs.
Gynecomastia is characterized by localized fat in one or both breasts, an excess of glandular tissue. Unfortunately, many men are bothered by this condition from puberty on. At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery in Natick, MA, our board-certified plastic surgeons have treated many cases of gynecomastia, reducing the size of the men’s breasts with liposuction, to remove the fatty tissue.

At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, we employ the most advanced techniques in liposuction – External Ultrasonic and Tumescent Liposuction - that help reduce bleeding, post-operative bleeding, swelling and pain. The External Ultrasonic technique uses ultrasound to alter fat deposits, making them easier to remove. With Tumescent liposuction, fat is injected with a physiologic solution before surgery, which causes the fat to swell, improving the penetration of the ultrasound wave and leading to easier removal of the fatty tissue.
Plastic Surgery for gynecomastia is a good option for men who are bothered by their enlarged breasts. Plastic surgery is recommended if they are physically healthy and are relatively of normal weight. If these men have realistic expectations of the surgery’s outcome and understand that their breasts will be reduced or contoured, it is a good decision.
The plastic surgery procedure, gynecomastia, will be done on an outpatient basis and will not require an overnight stay. However, if large quantities of fat are being removed, the procedure may require an overnight stay in a hospital or surgical center.
All surgical procedures involve risk. However, liposuction has a great safety record and the risks associated with the surgery can be minimized. Risks include unfavorable scarring, bleeding, blood clots, hemotoma, infection, poor wound healing, changes in nipple sensation and uneven contours to skin.
Post surgery, you will have to maintain your weight and stay off steroids, or drugs, which may have contributed to the condition. You will have scars around the areola and possibly others concealed by the natural contours of the breasts.
You should arrange to have someone drive you home and stay with you the first 24 hours, if you live alone. You should anticipate moderate discomfort and pain for 24-72 hours, after the anesthesia has worn off. If you experience pain after three days, contact your physician right away.
You may experience bruising and tenderness . You will have stitches which will be removed within seven to 10 days. You will wear a compression vest, which will help the tissue to heal. You will receive specific instructions about pain medication, dressings, drain tubes, general movement, bathing and return check-up visits. You can expect to return to work within seven to 10 days or possibly sooner depending on type of work. You will have to restrict any physical workouts for the first four to six weeks. It will take six months to a full year to see your best results.
